Francis Muscat
LILY YUNG MEMORIAL AWARD

While studying painting in college in the mid 70's I stumbled across Glass and was totally captured by its wonder and beauty. I enrolled in the Glass program at the Ontario College of Art in 1980 and since then have been producing work that is mostly about glass. My interest is in working with it sculpturally and using it as any other material, not just for its inherent beauty. I combine it with stone and wood and steel and it makes for a fabulous companion for these materials. My work is produced for gallery spaces but I have also worked the material into site specific environments. Working with landscape architects and designers I have realized indoor and outdoor projects both for private residences and public spaces. I also enjoy collaborating with other sculptors. Other than glass I have worked with wood, textiles, clay and paper and found objects. My strong belief in the arts has made me get involved with community art projects and I am also part time faculty at Durham College.
