Joe Han Lee
2014 AWARD: Lacy and Co. Ltd. Jewellery Supply Grant

Joe Han Lee is an award winning artist and alumnus of Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University where he studied material art and design, specializing in jewellery and metalsmithing. Lee’s fascination with the art of jewellery crafting started early as he grew up watching his grandfather and then his uncle perfect their craftsmanship in jewellery making. The family has operated a successful jewellery business in a beautiful small beach town called 'Pasir Putih' (White Sand) in South East Asia since the 1950s.

Originating from South East Asia, Lee currently resides in Canada and the experience of being in a different culture as well as how that experience transforms ones identity, plays a major role in the direction of his art. Lee’s main inspiration comes from the interplay of old and new elements coexisting and forever transforming each other. It exemplifies how our past and present coincide to perpetually alter our future. He produces fine art jewellery that is both old and new by blending traditional metalsmithing techniques with modern metalsmithing techniques, in addition to incorporating elements of antiquity in a modern and wearable form or vice versa.
